What are your top 5 books of 2006?
I had 3 big "author crushes" this year - Markus Zusak started me off with 'I am the Messenger' and his beautiful novel 'The Book Thief", probably my favorite "literary fiction" for the year. But I never would have picked up 'Book Thief' if I hadnt' fallen in love with 'I Am the Messenger' first. People always talk about "voices" in fiction, and I never really understood what that meant until I read Zusak.
I had a large pile of Buffy academia books that I got for christmas 2005, and 'Sex and the Slayer' was by far the BEST one of the bunch. Probably my favorite non-fiction buffy book ever. (though it's also one of the few that focuses on one aspect of the show and is written by one author, and not a collection of essays, so that helps).
My second "author crush" was on Christopher Moore. It was a total fluke (pun intended) that I found out about 'Dirty Job' (it was profiled in the same article as 'Book Thief') but I ordered it on a whim and just loved it. I'd been searching for an author who could make me laugh as much as Douglas Adams did, and Moore came thru. I think I've read almost all of his books now. 'Dirty Job' is my favorite of the bunch though, with 'stupidest angel' coming in a close second.
And last, but certainly not least, the author crush that will take me into 2007 - Scott Westerfeld. Uglies-Pretties-Specials. What a trilogy. They are both "popcorn books" (lots of action and adventure, like a good movie) and thinking books that bring up tough questions. Peeps & Last Days were also fantastic, but The Uglies Trilogy will probably stay on my top 10 list for awhile.
